The Home Office Interministerial Group (IMG) for Safety, Security and Migration met via videoconference on Wednesday 22 January 2025.
The meeting was chaired by the Home Secretary, the Rt Hon Yvette Cooper MP.
The Ministers in attendance were:
- From the UK Government: Dame Angela Eagle DBE MP, Minister for Border Security and Asylum, and, the Rt Hon Lord Hanson of Flint, Home Office Lords Minister
- From the Welsh Government: Jane Hutt CBE MS, Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice, Trefnydd and Chief Whip
- From the Scottish Government: Kaukab Stewart MSP, Minister for Equalities
- From the Northern Ireland Executive: Michelle O’Neill MLA, First Minister, Emma Little-Pengelly MLA, deputy First Minister, and Naomi Long MLA, Justice Minister
This was the first Home Office IMG since the general election in July 2024, as well as the first Home Office IMG where all governments were represented at ministerial level following restoration of the Northern Ireland Executive in February 2024.
In the IMG, ministers engaged in dialogue across the core themes of the group, including plans to link migration to labour market and skills policies (regular migration), the Border Security Command and the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill (irregular migration), the Safer Streets Mission and the Crime and Policing Bill (safety), and the Fraud Strategy (security).
All ministers agreed the importance of working closely together on these areas to ensure successful delivery for citizens across the whole of the UK.
It was agreed that the next meeting of the Home Office IMG would take place in May 2025.
