This watching brief is part of the continuing evolution of a more holistic approach by COC involving collation and consideration of all available evidence in the risk assessment of potential carcinogens. Although such an approach is not yet fully evolved, this paper marks recognition of the importance that the tumour microenvironment may play in carcinogenesis and highlights the need for further research.
