CMA advice to Defra on reform of the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has published its advice to Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) on the reform of veterinary sector regulation.

Details

The CMA has produced advice on the proposed reform of the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966, led by Defra and acting on behalf of the Scottish Government, the Welsh Government, and the Northern Ireland Executive.

This advice discusses the findings of our veterinary services market investigation final report, and draws upon these findings to consider Defra’s proposals for reform.

We advise the proposals would represent a significant step towards improved consumer protection and enhanced competition in the sector. There are opportunities to better ensure that the proposed legislation will improve outcomes for pet owners and drive competition across the sector, but there is significant alignment between the CMA’s recommendations and Defra’s proposals.
