Clean Maritime Research Hub competition

In March 2022, the government allocated £206 million for a UK Shipping Office for Reducing Emissions (UK SHORE). The UK SHORE programme, within the Department for Transport, is focused on decarbonising the domestic maritime sector. It will do this by developing a suite of interventions that address different barriers to maritime decarbonisation across a range of technology-readiness levels (TRLs).

In May 2022, UK SHORE committed to funding grant schemes for early research projects by UK universities.

In February 2023, UK SHORE and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) jointly allocated £7.4 million for a competition to establish a flagship UK national Clean Maritime Research Hub. The competition called for consortia of UK research organisations, such as universities, to bid to establish and deliver the virtual research hub.

Competition winner

The successful hub is led by Professor Antony Paul Roskilly of Durham University and includes the following 13 UK universities:

  • Durham University
  • University of Nottingham
  • University of Liverpool
  • Aston University
  • University of Ulster
  • University of Sheffield
  • University of St Andrews
  • City, University of London
  • University of Brighton
  • University of Birmingham
  • Cranfield University
  • Newcastle University
  • Solent University

The hub will run from September 2023 to March 2027, addressing TRL 1 to 3 research challenges in clean maritime. It will:

  • develop partnerships with industry and civic organisations to identify relevant research challenges and leverage match-funding
  • build capacity, evidence and expertise in the fundamental science behind clean maritime technologies, generating knowledge for the sector to adopt in the development of clean maritime solutions
  • be a centre of excellence, facilitating academic, industrial and civil stakeholder knowledge exchange, supporting skills development across academia and industry and producing practical, evidence-based support to maritime decision-makers
