Updated 24 September 2025

Applies to England

The Forestry Commission have teamed up with the Institute of Chartered Foresters to create a virtual learning experience in forestry. The programme is aimed at school/college students. Older students can also apply.

This programme introduces you to the values and practices that underpin modern forestry, from sustainable forest management to the latest conservation techniques.

How it works

You’ll learn the basics of working in forestry while participating in interactive activities that simulate real-world forestry challenges.

The experience is divided into ‘Springpod Sessions’. These are modules that you can watch and read in your own time, they include:

  • woodland planning and creation
  • forest management
  • conservation
  • career pathways

The modules include exclusive talks with forestry professionals to give you insight into career pathways and employability skills.

What you’ll learn

You’ll learn how industry professionals manage woodlands, conserve biodiversity and engage with local communities. This will help you get practical skills and insights into this vital sustainable industry.

You’ll explore the different roles in forestry, like forest rangers, nursery growers and woodland officers, while participating in interactive activities that simulate real-world forestry challenges.

You’ll also gain valuable skills like teamwork, communication and problem-solving.

What happens after

You’ll gain career advice and will have an idea on what to do next. This can include forestry apprenticeships, volunteering, further study or university courses.

You can download a certificate once you’ve finished the programme.
