The Environment Agency has received an application to vary an environmental permit under the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016 involving substantial change to a permit from Recycling Lives Compliance Services Limited.

The site is currently a waste operation site. The operator is proposing to add an additional treatment activity, increase the quantity of hazardous waste to be stored on site at any one time to >50 tonnes and also increase the quantity of hazardous batteries that are treated per day to >10 tonnes, meaning the site become an installation site. The proposed operations to be authorised under this variation are to: Increase the hazardous waste storage capacity from <50 tonnes to 5,000 tonnes at any one time (this requires the addition of Section 5.6 activity to the permit). Add a new hazardous waste installation activity under Section 5.3 Part A(1) (a)(ii) for the physico-chemical treatment involving the mechanical sorting and mechanical treatment of hazardous waste (batteries). Add physical/mechanical treatment of non-hazardous WEEE (site is currently permit to store WEEE) Reduce annual throughput of waste accepted at the site from 70,000 to 25,000 tonnes per year. This will comprise of approximately 20,000 tonnes for battery recycling and 5,000 tonnes of WEEE waste. Remove the End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV) and metal recycling activities that is currently authorised, including removal of the relevant conditions relating to these.
