Details

This licence allows you to disturb barns owls to survey them by observation to assess what impact a development proposal may have on them. You can survey for barn owl:

  • presence or absence
  • distribution

There’s no limit to the number of barn owls that may be disturbed, as long as you meet all the terms and conditions in licence CL29 (available on this page).

You must take care to avoid:

  • inappropriate disturbance to barn owls and other species of wild bird
  • any action which might endanger breeding success

Licence CL29 does not allow you to carry out certain activities. You must apply for a permit from the British Trust for Ornithology to do:

  • scientific research
  • conservation work
  • ringing or marking
  • nest recording

Register to use this licence

You must register with Natural England before you can use this licence. Send your completed registration form (CL29) by email or post to:

You don’t need to register if you have a personal survey licence.

How to report your actions

You must report your actions taken using this licence each year, even if you’ve taken no action. Send your completed report form (LR29) to Natural England by 31 January each year using the details on the form.

Licence renewal

By returning your report form each year you’ve renewed your licence. You should check for any amendments to the terms and conditions of use on the latest published version of this licence.
