Details

This licence allows you to disturb nesting barn owls by observation when carrying out surveys to provide information for development proposals. You can use this licence to survey for barn owl:

  • presence or absence
  • distribution

There is no limit to the number of barn owls that may be disturbed under this licence provided you meet all terms and conditions.

You must take care to avoid undue disturbance to barn owls and other species of wild bird, and avoid any action which might endanger breeding success.

This licence doesn’t let you do:

  • scientific research
  • conservation work
  • ringing or marking
  • nest recording

You must, in these cases, apply for a permit from the British Trust for Ornithology

Register to use this licence

This is a class licence. To use it, you must register with Natural England. Send the form by email or post to:

You don’t need to register if you have a personal survey licence.

You don’t need to apply for a new licence each year, but you’re advised to check newly issued licences for amendments to the terms and conditions of use.

How to report your actions

You must send an annual report to Natural England of any actions taken under this licence by 31 January each year.
