The Environment Agency has received a new bespoke application for an environmental permit under the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016 from National Grid Metering Limited.

The facility is a A16 Physical Treatment Facility. Taking National Grid’s displaced gas meters and associated equipment is returned for processing. All waste taken is manually sorted based on age, condition and model to see if it is suitable for refurbishment or not. Those that are not suitable for refurbishment are then further sorted in hazardous and non hazardous waste streams. The non-hazardous meters are placed into ferrous metal skips stored on site which are then collected by a 3rd party contractor. Part of the waste that isn’t suitable for refurbishment contain mercury, these fall into hazardous waste stream. All waste containing mercury are put through a mechanical separation process which takes place within an enclosed building (Mon-Fri, 8-4pm) on hard standing impervious surface.
