Apply for animal feedingstuffs authorisation (medicated feed)
Use this service to apply to be an authorised animal feedingstuffs manufacturer or distributor.

Details
Your premises must be authorised by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) if you:
- manufacture and distribute specified feed additives (SFAs)
- manufacture and distribute intermediate feedingstuffs containing SFAs or veterinary medicinal premixes
- manufacture complementary or complete feedingstuffs containing SFAs
- manufacture or distribute complete feedingstuffs containing veterinary medicinal premixes
These are known as schedule 5 activities as described in The Veterinary Medicines Regulations (as amended) 2013 (legislation.gov.uk) (VMR).
VMD authorise and inspect feed businesses carrying out these activities in England, Scotland and Wales.
You must submit a separate form for each premises which needs authorisation.
Apply online as a distributor
To apply as a distributor, you’ll need to provide:
- your contact details
- details of the trading premises
- your owner’s reference number, if you know it
- details of the person responsible for production
Apply online as a manufacturer
To apply as a manufacturer, you’ll need to provide:
- your contact details
- details of the trading premises
- your owner’s reference number, if you know it
- details of the person responsible for production
- the species of animal kept at the premises
- medications you plan to use
Application fee
The fee to apply for authorisation and initial inspection of each premises on which a schedule 5 activity takes place is £105.
You must pay the application fee by electronic transfer after you’ve submitted your application to:

After you’ve applied
Once you’ve applied for authorisation, we’ll send you a hazard analysis and critical control points (HACCP) plan template. You must fill it in and show it to the inspector on request.
Authorisation fee
Once you return your HACCP plan, VMD will send you an invoice for the inspection fee. The amount you pay depends on the category of authorisation you need.

Fees are not refundable once we have carried out an authorisation inspection.

Register
VMD will add your premises to the register of approved suitably qualified persons (SQP) retailers and feed businesses.
