Hydrogen from bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (H2 BECCS) is a technology that combines the production of hydrogen with the capture of carbon dioxide for storage. DESNZ commissioned the Energy Systems Catapult to collect evidence on these technologies.
The study combined reviews of publicly available research, market engagement and energy system modelling to assess their potential role in a future energy system.
Five technologies were explored:
- biomass gasification with CCS
- anaerobic digestion with steam methane reforming and CCS
- wastewater ammonia conversion
- biomass pyrolysis with CCS
- dark fermentation
These findings improve understanding of the strategic role H2 BECCS could play in producing low-carbon hydrogen, delivering negative emissions whilst supporting Net Zero and future innovation priorities and policy.
