4 September 2025: Increased number of haemonchosis cases diagnosed in sheep
Published 28 November 2025
Applies to England, Scotland and Wales
Situation
July this year has seen almost double the number of haemonchosis cases diagnosed by the APHA surveillance network compared to 2024. The most likely explanation is the suitable weather conditions for this parasite.
Details
Keep in mind that not all high egg counts will be due to haemonchus and not all pale ewes will have haemonchosis. As ever it’s crucial to use testing to inform management and treatment interventions.
APHA is offering discounted differential fluorescence testing to detect haemonchus eggs again this year (test code TC0777, 10g of faeces required). Currently this is £20.00 per sample (though prices will increase slightly from 1 June 2025).
