Rt Hon Grant Shapps MP

Secretary of State

Department for Energy Security & Net Zero

21 April 2023

Dear Dame Angela and Lord Browne,

I’d like to congratulate Dame Angela on your appointment to the role of Government

Chief Scientific Advisor and thank both of you for your work across government

science and engineering.

As you set out in early 2O2O through a set of recommendations, achieving net zero is

a unique, complex challenge and requires transformation of our existing systems,

and the challenge is rich with opportunity for economic growth. Creating a

Department for Energy Security & Net Zero means there is now a department whose

primary focus alongside energy security is driving overall delivery of net zero and

maximising the economic opportunity the transition presents.

I agree on the ongoing importance of involving system experts and engineers in

tackling the net zero challenge. Building on the Net Zero Review’s

recommendations, especially the development of the technology roadmaps and

supply chain assessment are priority areas to focus on next, as we jointly look to

further embed system tools in net zero policy and implementation.

My department would be delighted to draw on the expertise and support of the

Council in a more frequent manner going forward. I have asked my officials to talk to

colleagues on the Council’s secretariat about this.

I eagerly anticipate the opportunity to collaborate with you both.

Yours Sincerely,

RT HON GRANT SHAPPS MP

Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero
