Updated with information that the academies accounts return 2024 to 2025 submission deadline has now passed. Academy trusts can still access the form until Friday 27 March. It will then become read-only.

We have updated the chart of accounts spreadsheets, the account code guidance and the guide to adopting the academies chart of accounts. There are changes to academy top-slices on codes 530990 and 835170, and to the accounts return mapping for code 525600 (teaching school hub other income).

Details
This guidance is for academy trusts.
The academies chart of accounts is the Department for Education (DfE) standard for financial data that underpins the academies accounts return and budget forecast return.
Automation will not be available to complete the accounts return 2025 to 2026, as previously planned. DfE is reviewing how data is collected from academy trusts.
You need to complete the return using the traditional manual completion route.
As part of our review, we will consider collecting data in a format that:
- is more efficient and accessible for all trusts
- can support future requirements
This includes using digital submissions to Companies House.
We have removed guidance about automation from this page. We have also withdrawn the FMS comparison matrix page.
We will continue to:
- develop and support the academies chart of accounts as the sector’s standard for financial reporting
- encourage trusts to adopt the standard chart of accounts, to improve the efficiency of completing financial returns and data quality
