Biography
Shabana Mahmood was appointed Secretary of State for the Home Department on 5 September 2025.
She was reappointed as Home Secretary on 20 July 2026.
She previously served as Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice between 5 July 2024 and 5 September 2025.
Shabana was elected as the MP for Birmingham Ladywood in July 2024.
Secretary of State for the Home Department
The Secretary of State has overall responsibility for all Home Office business, including:
- overarching responsibility for the departmental portfolio
- oversight of the ministerial team
- Home Office business in Cabinet
- membership of the National Security Council (NSC)
- responsibility for public appointments relating to the work of the department
- oversight of the Security Service
