The Flood Forecasting Centre (FFC) is a working partnership between the Environment Agency and Met Office.


Summary

The Flood Forecasting Centre (FFC) provides forecasts, data and information to support flood response in England and Wales for:

  • the UK and Welsh governments
  • Category 1 and 2 responders
  • the wider responder community

We continuously improve our services through:

  • our development programme - bringing science and research into use
  • working closely with our users - to understand their evolving needs

Our services

The Flood Guidance Statement (FGS) is:

  • a 5-day flood risk forecast at a local authority scale

  • issued daily

  • for strategic, tactical and operational planning decisions

The Rapid Flood Guidance (RFG) is:

  • a summer service - providing short notice updates to supplement the FGS

  • issued on days with heightened flood risk

  • for supporting decision making in the 0 to 3 hour timescale

The Flood Outlook is:

  • a guidance forecast - showing flood likelihood for the coming month

  • issued twice a month

  • for supporting decision making in the 6 to 30 day timescale

As well as our services, we work to improve the national capability in flood forecasting.

We do this by:

  • bringing new science and forecasting techniques into operational use

  • developing our services to provide more accurate, targeted information

User research and engagement

We continually improve our services to ensure they meet user needs.

We do this by: 

  • measuring our performance through regular user feedback

  • undertaking research to inform service improvements

  • keeping engaged with our users - for example through open days and our user group

Natural Resources Wales issues flood alerts and warnings in Wales.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency issues flood alerts and warnings in Scotland.

The Met Office issues weather warnings for the UK.
