Our team and how we work

Working in the FFC

Meaningful work

The Flood Forecasting Centre (FFC):

  • plays a critical role in protecting lives, communities, and infrastructure
  • provides essential flood forecasts and guidance to responders and decision makers in England and Wales
  • supports decisions that directly affect how flood events are prepared for and dealt with

This means day‑to‑day work has a clear public service purpose and real‑world impact.

A unique partnership

The FFC is a working partnership between the Environment Agency (EA) and the Met Office. It combines hydrology and meteorology in one national centre based at the Met Office headquarters in Exeter.

Working as a joint team encourages collaboration across disciplines and organisations. This gives staff the opportunity to learn from different approaches and contribute to shared national objectives.

World class expertise

Our team is made up of a range of roles and professional backgrounds - with hydrology and meteorology at its core. Knowledge from other related disciplines such as oceanography and environmental science is also represented across the team. This allows for constant learning and development within everyday work.

Team culture

We are a close‑knit team of around 40 skilled staff, with a strong focus on collaboration and inclusion. We value teamwork and development - creating an environment where people feel supported and able to make meaningful contributions.

This aligns with Environment Agency and Met Office commitments to inclusive working practices and flexible working.
