Women in Business Week starts in Nukus

The British Embassy in partnership with the Karakalpakstan Branch of the Business Women’s Association of Uzbekistan are hosting the Women in Business Week from 3-5 June 2014. A number of educational activities will be hosted in Nukus with the aim of helping women gain expertise in business. More than 100 women representing small and medium enterprises in Karakalpakstan will participate in the event.

The agenda of the Women in Business Week includes a master-class from one of Britain’s best trainers in business start-ups and management and a round table with women managers working for British companies in Uzbekistan. They will share their experience in building successful professional careers. There will also be training courses on floristry and tailoring of modern clothing and curtains.

On 3 June representatives of the city administration, the Karakalpakstan Branch of the Business Women’s Association and other civic organizations, entrepreneurs and journalists participated in the opening ceremony of the Women in Business Week.

During her speech at the opening ceremony Ms Alison Beckett, Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy, read out a letter by Baroness Warsi, Senior Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, addressed to the Women in Business Week participants:

I know from my own recent visits to Uzbekistan that there is a wealth of talent and expertise amongst the women of the region, not least in the area of traditional applied arts and crafts. But it is important that these considerable skills can be used as a basis for successfully developing small businesses. That is why events such as this are so important, and I am pleased that participants will have the opportunity to hear from Uzbek women managers working for British companies in Uzbekistan who will be able to discuss and share their experiences in forging professional careers in business.

I wish the Women in Business Week every success and look forward to hearing about the fruits of your discussions.
