Vacancies at the British Hallmarking Council
The British Hallmarking Council is recruiting for 4 new members.
Do you have an interest in hallmarking? Are you experienced in consumer protection, precious metals trade/manufacture or quality assurance? Have you contributed significantly to resolving complex and challenging issues?
If you answered yes to any of these questions then we’d like to hear from you. If you’ve got the passion to sit on a Council which aims to promote better regulation for the UK hallmarking system and provide advice to the Secretary of State, then read on!
Established by the Hallmarking Act 1973, the British Hallmarking Council (BHC) protects consumer interests in a major UK market by ensuring that there are adequate facilities for hallmarking in the UK and advising the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills on hallmarking matters and hallmarking legislation. It is illegal for traders to sell a precious metal article or describe it as such unless it is hallmarked. Such marks guarantee the precious metal content of articles.
The Secretary of State now seeks applications for 4 members to serve for a term of 3 years, starting from 1 January 2016.
- 1 vacancy for a member with experience in the precious metal trade or manufacturing, either from the bespoke or mass produced jewellery market, or from retailing
- 3 vacancies for members either with consumer expertise, or independents with relevant experience
In addition to the specific expertise required, Council members come from a variety of backgrounds, with a range of experience, for eg: as an economic adviser in a service-based organisation; having had responsibility for quality in a customer focused organisation delivering services; having been a member of a board or committee with high-level policy responsibility; having helped to resolve complex and challenging issues, balancing conflicting interests and making impartial judgements.
The Council normally meets 2 or 3 times a year at one of the Assay Offices in London, Birmingham, Sheffield or Edinburgh, and you may also be asked to work on Council sub-committees as the need arises.
The appointments are not remunerated but there is the satisfaction which arises from the contribution the Council makes to the regulation of hallmarking in the UK. You will be reimbursed for travel, subsistence and other reasonable expenses.
