UK Government welcomes extension of Nepal’s Constituent Assembly

A Foreign Office Minister welcomed the Nepali political parties’ agreement to extend the term of the Constituent Assembly for a further three months.

Foreign Office Minister, Alistair Burt, said today:

“I welcome the Nepali political parties’ agreement to extend the term of the Constituent Assembly for a further three months. I take this opportunity to call on all political parties to show the flexibility and vision needed to complete the drafting of a democratic, inclusive Constitution within this extended mandate, including comprehensive consultation of the people of Nepal. This should be coupled with rapid and irreversible progress on the integration and rehabilitation of the former Maoist combatants, as well as the other outstanding issues from the Comprehensive Peace Accord.

“I reaffirm the UK Government’s full support for the peace process. The political parties must now move ahead from the difficulties of recent weeks and seize the opportunity to meet the aspirations of the Nepali people.”
