Trustees' Week 2015
National Trustees’ Week calls for more charity trustees from diverse backgrounds.
Today the sixth annual celebration of trusteeship, Trustees’ Week launches to highlight the great work that trustees do, and to draw attention to the opportunities for people from all walks of life to get involved on charity boards.
Charity trustees oversee charities and are ultimately responsible for how they run, normally giving their time as volunteers. There are 940,000 trustee positions in England and Wales that oversee the 164,000 registered charities. Many charities don’t have enough trustees or people with all of the right skills, so the Charity Commission is calling on more people from diverse backgrounds to volunteer, and for charities to do more to recruit them.
Trustees Week is now a regular feature in the charity calendar and is supported by the commission and many charity umbrella bodies. Chief Executive of the commission Paula Sussex is helping launch the week by speaking at the NCVO/BWB trustee conference being held in London today.
Paula Sussex said:
Trustees’ Week celebrates the work of thousands of local charity trustees who give their time for free to help charities run more effectively. They are unsung heroes and I want to thank them for their hard work and dedication. But we know trustee boards are better when they are made up of people with different skills and backgrounds, so this year I want to really encourage more local people to give their time, and for charities to look throughout their communities for diverse local talent.
