In a meeting yesterday with Maldivian President, Mohamed Nasheed, Foreign Secretary William Hague spoke of the strong UK support for the democratic reform process in Maldives.

The Foreign Secretary stressed the need for cross-party dialogue to continue, given the challenges in making much needed changes and reforms. He has also welcomed Maldives’ forward-looking positions in recent international human rights discussions.

The Foreign Secretary also congratulated the President on his progressive leadership on climate change including committing his country to carbon neutrality in 2020 and raising ambitions for robust global action.

He said:

“Collectively we share a responsibility to those most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. We hope that Cancun will restore the momentum and build on the foundations for reaching a legally binding global deal in the future”.
