The following statistics were published today by the Department of Health:
Quarterly Mental Health Community Teams Activity data for 2012-13 Quarter 2 and revisions for 2011-12 and 2012-13 Quarter 1.
The main findings for 2012-13 Quarter 2 were:
- Early Intervention (EI) teams served 5,137 new cases of psychosis in Quarter 1 and 2 of 2012-13.
- 97.2% of patients under adult mental illness specialties on Care Programme Approach (CPA) were followed up within 7 days of discharge from psychiatric inpatient care.
- 98.1% of admissions to psychiatric inpatient wards were gate kept by Crisis Resolution Home Treatment (CRHT) teams.
- Detailed reports with information by provider and commissioner can be found via the Department of Health website.
- Revisions to historical data caused a small reduction in the number of new cases of psychosis served by Early Intervention (EI) teams. Revisions had very little impact elsewhere.
Table 1 summarises the impact of revisions at national level on the number of new cases of psychosis served by early intervention (EI) teams.

1. **New cases of psychosis served by Early Intervention (EI) teams**
Early Intervention teams engage with people with a first episode of psychosis over a three-year period. The plan is to engage with 7,500 new people yearly and treat them over a period of up to three years.
2. **Patients under adult mental illness specialties on Care Programme Approach (CPA)**
People cared for by specialist mental health teams are likely to be monitored under the Care Programme Approach (CPA). Patients on CPA usually have multiple needs and require care coordination which is usually managed by a care plan. All patients on CPA discharged from psychiatric inpatient care are to be followed up either by face to face contact or by phone within 7 days of discharge to reduce risk of suicide and social exclusion and improve care pathways. The national threshold is to follow up 95% of patients within 7 days.
3. **Admissions to psychiatric inpatient wards gate kept by Crisis Resolution Home Treatment (CRHT) teams. **
Crisis Resolution Home Treatment (CRHT) teams offer intensive short-term support for people in mental health crisis in their own home, or suitable alternative non-NHS setting, thereby avoiding hospital admissions. All admissions to psychiatric inpatient wards are gate kept by a CRHT team by assessing the service user before admission and by being involved in all requests for admission. The national threshold is to gate keep 95% of all admissions to psychiatric inpatient wards.
4. **Provider and Commissioner data**
Commissioner based returns reflect data on a responsible population basis, which is defined as:
- all those patients resident within the PCT boundary; plus
- all patients registered with GPs who are members of the PCT, but are resident in another PCT; minus
- All patients resident in the PCT, but registered with a GP who is a member of another PCT
Provider based returns cover patients for whom English commissioners are responsible.
