Monthly situation reports on critical care beds, cancelled operations and delayed transfers of care published

The following statistics were released today by the Department of Health:

Monthly situation reports on critical care beds, cancelled operations and delayed transfers of care.

The main findings for August 2011 were:

• There were 3,704 adult critical care beds available with 2,953 occupied in August 2011. This compares with 3,706 available and 2,947 occupied in July 2011.
• The number of urgent operations cancelled was 254 in August 2011. This compares with 203 urgent operation cancellations in July 2011.
• There were 4,217 patients delayed on the last Thursday of the month, with the total number of delayed days in the month at 119,770 days. This compares to 4,311 patients in July and 116,996 days delayed.
• Of the 4,217 patients, 2,332 were acute patients and of the 119,770 delayed days, 63,835 were acute.
