Ambassador asked to account for reports overnight of Russian military vehicles crossing the border into Ukraine.

The Russian Ambassador Alexander Vladimirovich Yakovenko was summoned to the Foreign Office this afternoon to meet Acting Permanent Under Secretary Matthew Rycroft.

Mr Rycroft asked the Ambassador to account for reports overnight of Russian military vehicles crossing the border into Ukraine. If true, such an incursion would be an unacceptable violation of international law and of Ukraine’s territorial sovereignty. Mr Rycroft recalled the British Government’s readiness to support all efforts in bringing an end to the crisis in Ukraine, and its welcome for any Russian efforts to do the same.

Earlier today at the meeting of European Foreign Ministers in Brussels, the Foreign Secretary called for Russia to withdraw any military personnel in eastern Ukraine and to stop its support for the armed separatists there.
