Prime Minister offers birthday wishes to Aung San Suu Kyi

David Cameron phoned Aung San Suu Kyi on her 66th birthday.

Number 10 issued the following statement:

The Prime Minister spoke to Aung San Suu Kyi this afternoon to offer his best wishes on her birthday, the first she has been able to celebrate with her friends and family for many years. Aung San Suu Kyi briefed the prime minister on her plans to travel outside of the capital. The Prime Minister welcomed this intention noting that as a free citizen she had the right to travel and speak freely.

“Aung San Suu Kyi thanked the Prime Minister for the call and asked him to pass on her thanks and best wishes to the British people for their continuing support for democracy in Burma.”
