PM meets Jose Manuel Barroso, President, the European Commission

Prime Minister David Cameron has welcomed the President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, to Number 10.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

Their meeting covered issues to be discussed later this week at the European Council including events in North Africa and the Middle East, migration and plans to drive economic growth through further action to cut red tape for small businesses.

There was also an initial discussion of the next multi-annual budgetary framework for the EU.

A Downing Street spokesperson said:

The Prime Minister emphasised that at a time when countries are making considerable efforts to bring down public deficits, there needs to be similar discipline over EU spending, with a real terms freeze from 2014 to 2020.
