Permanent Under-Secretary visited Uzbekistan.

Permanent Under-Secretary at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Sir Simon McDonald visited Uzbekistan.

Sir Simon McDonald met Deputy Foreign Minister Mr Anvar Nasirov

Permanent Under-Secretary at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Sir Simon McDonald made a working visit to Uzbekistan 24 - 26 September 2017.

During his visit Sir Simon McDonald met Deputy Foreign Minister Mr Anvar Nasirov, First Deputy Chairman of the Senate of Oliy Majlis Senator Sodiq Safoev, and Director of the National Human Rights Centre Dr Akmal Saidov.

Sir Simon McDonald also visited Samarkand, held meetings with British businesses working in Tashkent, representatives of civil society, Uzbek alumni of British universities and students of the University of World Economy and Diplomacy.

Following the visit, Sir Simon McDonald said:

I have very much enjoyed my first visit to Uzbekistan. It is a beautiful country with so much going for it. We have discussed a range of issues including economic reform and human rights. I am particularly impressed with the pace and ambition of reform and the UK stands ready to support in any way we can.
