David Lidington, Minister for Europe, met Vitali Klitschko, leader of the Ukrainian Democratic Alliance for Reform party, for the first time today to discuss the situation in Ukraine and their prospects of meeting the criteria set by the EU to allow closer integration.

Speaking after the meeting, the Minister said:

I was pleased to have the opportunity to discuss with Vitali Klitschko, leader of the Ukrainian Democratic Alliance for Reform, his party’s commitment to a deeper relationship between the EU and Ukraine.

The British government remains a firm supporter of Ukraine’s EU aspirations. We want to see them make the necessary reforms to allow the Association Agreement to progress to signature. Mr Klitschko knows that Ukraine has a lot of work to do, and we discussed the role that a pro-active opposition can play in promoting the implementation of reforms that benefit all citizens.
