Minister for Africa welcomes the arrest of Bernard Munyagishari

Foreign Office Minister Henry Bellingham has released a statement following the transfer of Bernard Munyagishari to the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) in Arusha.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

He said:

“I welcome the news that Bernard Munyagishari has been transferred to the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) in Arusha, where he will be charged with some of the most serious crimes of international concern, including genocide and crimes against humanity.

“The ICTR continues to carry out the mandate given to it by the international community to bring to justice those most responsible for the dreadful crimes committed in Rwanda in 1994. Munyagishari’s arrest demonstrates that there can be no escape from the reach of international justice.

“The Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo has co-operated closely with the ICTR in the arrest of Munyagishari. I encourage all countries to provide the ICTR with full co-operation as it seeks to bring to justice the remaining fugitives”.
