This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

Government Procurement Service (GPS) has announced the award of a new Legal Services framework which replaces the existing Legal Services and LitCat frameworks.

The new single cross- government framework was developed in close collaboration with Government Legal Service (GLS) and will drive further savings and improve efficiency in the provision of legal services. It has been developed to meet the needs of the whole of the public sector.

The new Legal Services framework provides access to high quality professional legal services, whilst delivering best value for the taxpayer. It covers eight categories of legal service provision:

  • Lot 1 - IT, telecoms, media and e-commerce
  • Lot 2 - property and estates
  • Lot 3 - employment and pensions
  • Lot 4 - general corporate, including tax insolvencyGeneral
  • Lot 5 - finance and financial regulation
  • Lot 6 - general commercial
  • Lot 7 - general litigation and legal services
  • Lot 8 - major or complex projects

These categories were developed by GPS and GLS to offer ready access to a wide range of firms - from niche practices to full service commercial firms - including those with the ability to handle complex and high value projects.

The value of the framework is estimated at up to £250million over a period of up to four years. Legal services procurement is subject to strict spending controls.
