Heads of Mission meeting with Kenya's electoral commission

As Heads of Mission from international partners supporting Kenya’s August 8 elections, we met this morning with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman and Commissioners. We congratulated the Commission on the important National Elections Conference held in Nairobi on 13-14 June, which allowed participants to discuss electoral preparations and to make clear their support for free, fair, credible, and peaceful elections.

The conference was an important sign of confidence in the IEBC, and we urge all Kenyans to continue to support the IEBC. We warmly welcome the signing of the IEBC pledge to “peaceful and credible elections,” by so many Kenyans, including President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

We urge the IEBC to continue to engage and communicate its preparations widely and transparently. As friends of Kenya, we will continue to support the IEBC in their critical role in conducting credible and peaceful elections.

This statement has been issued by the following Heads of Mission in Kenya:

Nic Hailey (High Commissioner for the United Kingdom), Robert F. Godec (Ambassador of the United States), Stefano Dejak (Ambassador, European Union Delegation to Kenya), Jutta Frasch (Ambassador of Germany), Ralf Heckner (Ambassador for Switzerland), Johan Borgstam (Ambassador of Sweden), Angela Loi (Deputy Chief of Mission for Italy), Ramses Malatay (Chargé d’Affaires a.i., for Finland), Kira Smith Sindbjerg (Chargé d’Affaires a.i., for Denmark), Vebjørn Heines (Chargé d’Affaires a.i., for Norway).
