Passports and visas

  • British passport holders don’t need a visa to travel to Portugal
  • remember your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) but also take out travel insurance, even if you’re only going for one night - it could save you a lot of money if you get into difficulties
  • you must carry ID with you at all times - you’ll need to carry your passport to the match to gain entry to the stadium
  • if you lose your passport report the loss immediately to the police and obtain a copy of the police report. Should you need an emergency travel document contact the British Embassy on the telephone number below

Getting to the stadium

At the match

  • you may be subject to a body search at the entrance to the turnstiles
  • you may be asked for evidence that bottles or containers do not carry alcohol, if there is doubt the container will be confiscated
  • alcohol is banned in the stadium and anyone noticeably under the influence of alcohol or drugs will not be allowed into the stadium; under Portuguese law you may be breathalysed by the police upon entry
  • racist comments and chants are illegal
  • climbing of fences to place flags is expressly forbidden
  • no pyrotechnics or fireworks are allowed in the stadium

  • as in any other city be alert, keep sight of your belongings at all times and beware thieves using distraction techniques
  • do not carry all your valuables together in bags or pockets; leave spare cash and valuables in a safe place
  • avoid leaving items in an unattended car, even for a short period; if you have no alternative, hide them in the boot before you reach your destination; remember that foreign-registered and hire cars are often targeted by thieves
