Foreign Secretary William Hague has welcomed the Arab League's leadership in seeking an end to the horrific violence in Syria.

Commenting on the Arab League’s decision to impose sanctions on Syria, the Foreign Secretary William Hague said:

“We welcome the Arab League’s leadership in seeking an end to the horrific violence in Syria. Today’s unprecedented decision to impose sanctions demonstrates that the regime’s repeated failure to deliver on its promises will not be ignored and that those who perpetrate these appalling abuses will be held to account. We will continue to support the Arab League’s efforts to restore peace to Syria.

“The UN cannot remain silent on the ongoing brutality taking place in Syria. To that end we welcome the commitment by the Arab League to engage with the UN Secretary General at the earliest opportunity to gain the UN’s support to address the situation in Syria.

“We will continue to keep the international community’s focus on Syria until there is an end to the bloodshed.”
