Foreign Secretary welcomes release of political prisoners in Burma

Foreign Secretary William Hague described the release of political prisoners as another positive step towards the country's return to democracy.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

Speaking today, the Foreign Secretary said:

“We welcome the Burmese government’s announcement that it has released several hundred prisoners, including a number of political prisoners. This is another positive step towards the country’s return to democracy.

“The UK has consistently called for the release of all political prisoners in Burma. We also call for the establishment of an independent mechanism to assess the status of those that remain and to lift restrictions, including on travel, for all those that have been released.”
