Foreign Secretary welcomes Afghan Election Breakthrough

William Hague welcomes Afghan Presidential election audit and agreement to establish a government of national unity.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

Foreign Secretary William Hague said:

I congratulate the two Afghan Presidential candidates on reaching agreement today, and for putting the interests of the Afghan people first.

I hope the audit of all the votes will enable Afghans to have confidence in the electoral process and its outcome. The UK will support efforts to ensure the audit is robust and meets international standards.

I also welcome the commitment that the eventual winner will establish a government of national unity.

I congratulate Secretary Kerry for his part in reaching this vital agreement. We look forward to welcoming the Afghan government and international community to the NATO Summit in Wales and the London Conference on Afghanistan later this year.
