Foreign Secretary saddened to hear of death of Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai

Foreign Secretary William Hague highlighted the vital contribution that Wangari Maathai made to sustainable development, democracy and peace across Africa.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

Speaking after the death of Wangari Maathai, the Foreign Secretary said:

“I was very sad to hear of the death of Professor Wangari Maathai last night in Kenya. As Africa’s first woman Nobel Peace Prize winner, she made a vital contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace across the continent. She was a charismatic figure and her passing is a great loss to the world, to Africa, and to Kenya. Her example will inspire generations of young people in Africa and around the world”
