Foreign Secretary call to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Klimkin

The Foreign Secretary has restated UK support for Ukraine in a call to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Klimkin.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

The Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond spoke yesterday to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin. The Foreign Secretary restated the UK’s strong support for Ukraine’s government and people and for a diplomatic solution to the Ukraine crisis.

Speaking after the telephone conversation, Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond, said:

The UK stands behind the Ukrainian government and people in the face of continued aggression and instability caused by Russian-backed separatists in the east. I am concerned by the latest reports of heavy weapons entering Ukraine from Russia.

I urge President Putin to comply with Russia’s commitments under the Minsk Agreement and withdraw all Russian troops and equipment from Ukrainian territory and end its military support for the separatists. Russia must respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. If it does not, it should understand that there will be further consequences for its relationship with the international community.
