Foreign Office Minister welcomes establishment of a Special Rapporteur on Belarus

Minister for Europe David Lidington said the establishment sends a strong message of concern about the deteriorating human rights situation in the country.

Speaking today he said:

“I welcome today’s resolution of the UN Human Rights Council establishing a Special Rapporteur on Belarus. It sends a strong message that countries across the world are increasingly concerned about the deteriorating human rights situation in Belarus. The Rapporteur will be a valuable source of independent reporting on events in the country, and will help keep the spotlight on the situation there. I urge the Government of Belarus to cooperate fully with this new mechanism, and to implement the recommendations of the most recent report by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.”
