Foreign Office Minister Hugo Swire welcomes Japan and South Korea’s agreement over the so-called 'comfort women'

The two countries have agreed a settlement regarding the issue of women from the Republic of Korea being forced to work as sex slaves for Japanese soldiers during World War Two.

Speaking today, Minister for Asia Hugo Swire said:

I welcome the news that Japan and the Republic of Korea have reached this agreement which recognises the deep pain and suffering these women have endured. Both countries are important partners for the UK. I look forward to today’s agreement paving the way for deeper cooperation between them and for increased stability in the region.
