Foreign Office Minister expresses concern over Iran's nuclear programme

Foreign Office Minister Alistair Burt has commented on the most recent International Atomic Energy Association report on Iran.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

Foreign Office Minister Alistair Burt said:

“The IAEA’s latest report has made clear that it is “increasingly concerned” about the possible military dimensions to Iran’s nuclear programme. The UK and our partners very much share this concern.

“Iran’s nuclear plans - in particular its recent moves to increase its capacity to enrich uranium to 20% at Qom - expose the lie that its programme is purely for peaceful purposes. There is no plausible civilian explanation for Iran’s plans to enrich so much uranium to 20%. Despite some recent steps towards engaging with the IAEA, Iran has a long way to go to meet the international community’s concerns about its nuclear activities. The IAEA has once again made this clear. Until Iran fully co-operates, the international pressure will only increase.”
