Foreign Minister welcomes AU peace plan for Sudan and South Sudan

Foreign Minister for Africa Henry Bellingham comments on the African Union Peace and Security Council communiqué outlining a peace plan between Sudan and South Sudan.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

Foreign Office Minister Henry Bellingham said:

“I warmly welcome the roadmap that the African Union Peace and Security Council has set out for restoring peace between Sudan and South Sudan in its communique of 24 April. I call on the governments of both countries to comply with the timetable for a ceasefire and the implementation of security arrangements at their common border.

“I am confident that the African Union High-Level Implementation Panel led by President Mbeki can help the parties to find a fair resolution on all the outstanding issues between them, and welcome the urgency this has been given by the three month deadline they have set.

“The United Kingdom will continue to give support to the High-Level Implementation Panel and will work with our partners to reinforce the AU’s peace plan.”
