EU Rule of Law mission vehicles were targeted in an attack in Northern Kosovo this morning. In response to reporting of the incident, FCO Minister for Europe, David Lidington, said:

I was deeply saddened to hear of the attack on members of the EU Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo (EULEX), this morning in the vicinity of Zveçan/Zvečan, resulting in the death of a EULEX customs officer. My thoughts and condolences are with the family and colleagues of the victim. The UK strongly condemns this violent act, and fully supports the efforts of the authorities to find the perpetrators of this attack and to bring them to justice.

The UK is committed to supporting the 19 April Agreement between Kosovo and Serbia, including holding free, fair and inclusive municipal elections throughout Kosovo on November 3.

I also reiterate the UK’s strong support for the EULEX mission in Kosovo, and pay tribute to the contribution the mission has made to Kosovo’s irreversible progress on its EU path in recent months. Attacks such as that we have seen today will not be permitted to disrupt the positive and courageous progress we have seen.
