The 15th Diplomatic Mini-Football Tournament, organized by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was held in Tashkent on 7-8 September 2013. 26 teams representing diplomatic missions and international organizations accredited in Uzbekistan competed in the tournament, including a team from the British Embassy.

Supporters of the Embassy team including the youngest spectator at the Tournament – the three month old son of the team’s captain – cheered on our players and waved the biggest British flag in Central Asia (3x5 metres) to lift their fighting spirit. Against strong opponents, the team played their hardest and won four out of six matches. They narrowly missed qualifying from the group stage, but they impressed their supporters and other spectators with their commitment and dynamism.

The British Ambassador, George Edgar, who attended the tournament to support the Embassy team, said after the last game: “I congratulate the British Embassy team for their strong performance, and all those who participated or who had a hand in organising the event. It was the best sort of sporting event in which, in the Russian expression “pobedila druzhba” – the winner was friendship”.
