Minister of State for International Development, Desmond Swayne MP, wishes Eid Mubarak to Muslims in Britain and across the world.

Desmond Swayne said:

As Muslims end a month of fasting, I want to wish them a very happy Eid celebration. During this period of reflection, I know that Muslims across the world and here in Britain will be thinking of those less fortunate than themselves and how we can support them.

The UK stands by all those facing incredible hardship, whether it be due to conflict, disease or poverty. In Sylhet, and across Bangladesh, for instance, UK aid is making a huge difference to the lives of millions of people. Our programmes are making sure women give birth safely, children can go to school and people can set up businesses so they can earn their own money and lift themselves out of poverty.

Notes to Editors

In 2013-14 DFID’s programme spend in Bangladesh was £262 million.

  • 500,000 women will give birth safely and their babies will receive improved care by the end of 2015.
  • 27.5 million people are now able to cope better with the devastating effects of floods, cyclones and climate change, thanks to early warning systems.
