The Rt Hon Sir Desmond Swayne TD MP

Biography

The Rt Hon Sir Desmond Swayne TD served as Minister of State at the Department for International Development from July 2014 until July 2016. He served as a Government Whip from September 2012 until July 2014. He was elected Conservative MP for New Forest West, in Hampshire, in 1997.

Education

Sir Desmond was educated at Drumley House Preparatory School at Mossblown in South Ayrshire and Bedford School. He studied Theology at St Marys College at the University of St Andrews.

Political career

Following the election of David Cameron as leader of the Conservative Party in December 2005, Sir Desmond was appointed as his Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS). He maintained his role as a PPS in government until appointed a Government Whip in September 2012.

On 13 July 2011, Sir Desmond was appointed a Privy Counsellor.

Career outside politics

From 1980 to 1981 Sir Desmond was a school teacher in Economics at Charterhouse, then Wrekin College from 1982 to 1987. From 1988 to 1996, he was Manager of Risk Management Systems at the Royal Bank of Scotland.
