The Department published the homecare medicines report ‘Towards a Vision for the Future’ in December 2011.

The supply of hospital prescribed medicines direct to patients in their own homes is relatively new. Its correct operational management presents challenges to both the NHS and its commercial partners. The market is expanding and arrangements will have to adapt and develop within a rapidly changing healthcare environment.

To ensure that DH fully understands the implications for both patients and the NHS, DH invited Mark Hackett, CEO, Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust, to lead a rapid review of Homecare Medicine Supply to consider the current operational arrangements and its future for the best value for patients, the NHS and the provider market.
