News agency Mediafax and British Embassy Bucharest are jointly organising the Mediafax Talks about Digital Europe conference on Tuesday, 25 March 2014, starting 0930, in Bucharest, Hotel Radisson Blu, Atlas room.

In 2013 broadband coverage was available to 99,9% of EU citizens while 73% of households subscribed to broadband at home. Studies show us that there would be up to 900 000 unfilled IT jobs by 2015. In 2012, 45% of citizens engaged in e-commerce, but only 11% in cross border e-commerce.

The Digital Agenda of Europe will boost the EU economy and enable Europe’s citizens and businesses to get the most out of digital technologies. One of the goals is to reduce the difference between roaming and national mobile charges to almost zero by 2015. Another goal is that 50% of Europeans use e-Government by 2015.

Therefore it is important to accelerate the roll out of cutting-edge technologies, like 4G mobile phone services, across the EU, review product labeling, sales and promotion regulations and other restrictions placed on cross-border online trading by Member States; adopt measures to ensure a competitive market in online payments services and tackle excessive credit card interchange fees, develop a modern, flexible copyright regime which encourages the provision of innovative, legal online content, implement the Open Data Charter to improve transparency and ease of use of non-personal data by society and the economy.

All these will have positive effects on the economy and will help to connect, inform and entertain us, and will also drive innovation.

We are bringing together authorities, representatives from embassies and chambers of commerce, manufacturers, retailers, web managers and designers, marketing managers, and brand managers, small business owners and mass media representatives from Romania,Austria, Hungary, Croatia, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Poland, Slovenia, Slovakia and the UK.

The conference will include a policy debate and workshops on retail and cyber security.
