The Consulate General in Shanghai celebrated HM The Queen’s 90th Birthday by breaking the “Largest Cream Tea Party” Guinness World Record.
The British Consulate General Shanghai celebrated Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th Birthday by hosting a Guinness World Record breaking “Largest Cream Tea Party ever”.
2016 marks the 30th anniversary of Her Majesty’s visit to Shanghai, and HM Consul General John Edwards felt that this was the perfect way to celebrate such a historic occasion.
The day began with a Garden Party featuring interactive games, performances and a sponsors area. It then moved on to the Guinness World Record attempt followed by the formal toast to HM The Queen and finished with a ’90 for 90 VIP Dinner’ hosted by the Consul General and Britain’s Deputy Ambassador to China Martyn Roper.
735 people successfully completed the official Guinness World Record attempt all playing a part in breaking the previous record that stood at 691 people.
During his speech Consul General John Edwards said:
Today we are celebrating something very special: the 90th birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second.
We wanted to do something different and amazing to mark that occasion. And I want to thank all of you for helping us to do that. Everyone of you here is a Guinness World Record holder!
When the Queen acceded to the throne Winston Churchill was the British Prime Minister. Chen Yi was the Mayor of Shanghai. And both of our countries were emerging from the wreckage of war.
Thirty years ago she visited this city at a time when it was beginning to open up again to the world.
Today the UK and China are thriving economies and vibrant societies. Most importantly we are partners. In China. In the UK. Globally.
I want to thank you all for that too. Because the people here are the ones who have been making that happen day in day out on the ground.
This year’s party was held at the Intercontinental Hotel Group’s Ruijin Hotel and was developed on a theme of Alice in Wonderland. The creative industries are an important area of collaboration between the UK and China, especially in a year that sees the British Council engaging audiences across China on the Shakespeare lives campaign.
A thespian society from Wellington College Shanghai, Anqing Opera troupe, Magician, Violinist, bagpiper and drummer all weaved together during the Queen’s Birthday Party to showcase UK-China creative exchange.

The Vice Mayor of Shanghai, Mr Tu Guangshao along with leading figures in the UK-China relationship all took part in the formal part of the Garden party.
