British Ambassador makes a statement following the conclusion of the Afghanistan Peace Jirga

We welcome the Consultative Peace Jirga held in Kabul this week. We hope that it marks the start of a comprehensive and genuinely representative political process that engages the Afghan people and brings the conflict to an end. We therefore welcome the participant’s pledge to return to their areas as messengers of peace .

The Prime Minister spoke to Afghan President Hamid Karzai on 1 June. The Prime Minister reiterated UK support for the Government of Afghanistan’s outreach to their disaffected brothers who are willing to cut ties with al-Qaeda, cease violence against the Afghan state, and accept the Afghan Constitution.
