John Penrose, Minister for Tourism and Heritage, today welcomed Environment Agency news that 98 per cent of UK bathing waters passed mandatory EU water quality checks last year, and the commitment to continue to raise standards.

Mr Penrose said: “Tourism is a fantastically important part of the UK’s economy and will play a key role in our recovery. An important part of our tourist offer is, of course, seaside holidays.

“For millions of us, they are not just a wonderful holiday destination but a very real part of our cultural heritage.

“So I’m delighted that the importance of this is fully recognised in the forward investment plans that the water industry has agreed with the Environment Agency.”
